Teaching Kids To Take Pills

Teaching Kids To Take Pills

Getting kids to take their supplements or medications can be a real challenge. And for kids on the Spectrum, it is usually even harder. But any child that can swallow food and swallow a pill – it is just a matter of practice. Remind your child that once they learn to swallow pills, they don’t have to taste the yucky mixed supplement liquid. I recommend practicing with empty capsules every day for about 5 minutes, with praise for trying and a reward for accomplishing the goal. Sometimes your ABA provider can help with this. Make these sessions a low pressure situation, remaining calm no matter what – even if the child gags or vomits. These links offer additional advice for teaching kids to swallow pills. Once your child learns this important skill, the daily supplement routine gets a lot easier!
